What is TurTel?

TurTel is a small independent telephone project for old phones, private telephone networks, C*NET connections, retro computing, and practical analog telephone experiments.

The goal is simple: make real telephones ring again and provide carrier grade service. Rotary phones, touch-tone phones, key systems, small PBXs, payphones, modems, and oddball telephone equipment can be connected to a private modern back end while still behaving like telephone equipment.

We are currently beta testing. A order form will appear here when were ready for customers!

Local Eugene-area C*NET home or business conversion: TurTel can visit a local site, clean up existing inside telephone wiring, isolate unused old POTS wiring where appropriate, install a TurTel-managed analog gateway, and provision two analog telephone ports for C*NET use.

C*NET

C*NET is a collector and hobby telephone network made of private switches, PBXs, gateways, and telephone enthusiasts. TurTel is volunteer-run; fees collected help cover costs such as equipment, permits, licensing, power, and bandwidth.

Who can I connect to?

You can connect to anyone reachable on C*NET. C*NET is a little like NANPA for telephone collectors: it provides a shared numbering and routing space for private telephone switches and hobby telephone projects. TurTel manages a block of telephone numbers that can help connect local users to C*NET. TurTel provides 24/7 carrier grade C*NET services.

Local Eugene-area users, businesses, and special numbers connected to TurTel may be listed in an upcoming TurTel directory and TurTel yellow pages.

Important limitations

TurTel C*NET service is a private hobby and experimental telephone service. It is not a replacement for landline telephone service, and it does not connect to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). TurTel service connects to C*NET only. There is no cellular service, no 911, no alarm monitoring, no medical alert service, and no life-safety communication service of any kind. In most cases, A TurTel ATA runs over your home Internet connection. It is not a landline and will usually not work without Internet access. TurTel may also run over leased lines, dry pairs, or other private links where available.

We also do not plan to provide operator service. There are at times operator services on C*NET
